TL;DR

The Milan Duomo complex is open every day of the year, but each part runs on its own clock: the cathedral interior and Archaeological Area run 09:00–19:00 (last entry ~18:00), the rooftop terraces 09:00–19:00 (last ascent 18:00–18:10), and the Duomo Museum and Church of San Gottardo 10:00–19:00, closed every Wednesday. The single best time to visit is a weekday — Tuesday to Friday, but not Wednesday if you want the museum — right at the 09:00 opening, or after about 16:00, in the shoulder seasons of April–May or late September–October. Avoid weekend middays, summer afternoons and Sunday mornings, which are reserved for Mass.

For 2026 the terraces stay open until 20:00 on holiday stretches and every Friday to Sunday from 5 June to 13 September, plus Thursday-evening "Serate d'Incanto" sunset concerts running 11 June to 10 September 2026 (lift access from €20 full / €10 reduced).

Opening hours, zone by zone

Five key findings shape everything below. Every zone has a different last-entry cut-off — the most common planning mistake. The Duomo Museum and San Gottardo close every Wednesday, the complex's only regular weekly closure; the cathedral, rooftop and archaeological area stay open. Sources disagree on last-admission and even opening times, reconciled below. The Crypt of Saint Charles keeps restricted hours and shrinks to an afternoon-only window on Sundays. And 2026 has confirmed extended evening hours plus a summer heat-services programme.

Extended evening hours & Serate d'Incanto 2026

Two separate things extend the terraces past 19:00 in 2026, and they are booked differently. One is a straightforward extension of standard opening hours on named dates; the other is a ticketed Thursday-evening concert series.

Serate d'Incanto — Thursday sunset concerts

From 11 June to 10 September 2026, the terraces host live music at sunset on Thursday evenings. Start times shift with the daylight: 20:30 on June and July Thursdays, 20:00 in August, 19:30 in September. Lift access is priced from €20 full / €10 reduced.

These evening slots are the first thing to sell out in summer. If a sunset rooftop photo is the point of your visit, treat the Serate d'Incanto Thursdays and the Friday-to-Sunday 20:00 evenings as the only reliable route between late June and mid-August, when the sun does not set until around 21:00.

Other experiences you might enjoy

Once your Duomo time slot is locked in, the rest of the day usually builds around it. Most visitors climb to the Duomo rooftop terraces straight after the nave, walk out through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II next door, and continue to Sforza Castle or the Brera and Navigli districts for the evening. Across town, Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie runs its own stricter timed-entry system and needs to be slotted around your Duomo booking, not after it. Guided Duomo and rooftop tours, Milan walking tours, hop-on hop-off buses and Brera food tours all start within a few minutes of Piazza del Duomo. The widget below pulls in live availability for these and other Milan experiences.

Mass times, free worship access & the Nivola

The Duomo is a working cathedral before it is a monument. Services restrict tourist movement through the nave every day, and heavily so on Sunday mornings — the single biggest reason a Sunday-morning visit disappoints.

Weekday Eucharist
07:00 · 08:00 · 08:30 (Crypt) · 11:00 · 17:30
Sundays & holidays
07:00 · 08:00 · 09:30 · 11:00 (Latin) · 12:30 · 17:30
Free worship entrance
Side door from ~06:50; north façade 08:00–19:00
Free crypt worship access
Mon–Sat 08:00–10:00

Attending Mass is free, but you must stay within the worship area — it is not a way to sightsee the cathedral for nothing. If you want to see the nave, the stained glass and the Meridian properly, you need a ticketed visit; our walk-through of the interior covers what to look for.

Rito della Nivola — mid-September

Around 14 September, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, the Archbishop of Milan ascends roughly 40 metres on the "Nivola" — a painted cloud-shaped lift — to retrieve the Holy Nail relic, which is then displayed for three days. It is one of the cathedral's great set pieces, and it significantly restricts tourist access to the nave on those days. Plan around it, or plan for it deliberately.

Weather considerations

If the terraces are sold out for the slot you want — common on summer weekends and every extended-hours evening — a guided rooftop tour holds its own allocation and is the reliable fallback:

What we'd actually do

  1. Default plan: visit on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, arriving for the 09:00 opening, in late April–May or late September–October. Book a combined timed ticket online.
  2. Sunset rooftop photos: in spring and autumn a late-afternoon standard ticket works. In summer, book a Friday–Sunday evening slot or a Thursday Serate d'Incanto.
  3. If the museum matters: do not go on a Wednesday.
  4. On Sundays and holidays: arrive after the main morning Masses — early afternoon.
  5. Thresholds worth deciding in advance: 25 December means every ticketed area is closed, so pick another day; a thunderstorm forecast means do the indoor areas first and keep the rooftop flexible; a peak-summer or holiday bridge means booking several weeks ahead and targeting an early-morning or evening slot.

Before you book — the fine print

Last admission varies by source

Official pages say 18:00, others 18:10. Work to 18:00 and confirm on the day.

Crypt and Treasury hours differ between sources

The figures above follow the most recent official bulletin, but these two are the least stable in the complex.

Mass times can change

Service times and worshipper-access windows are subject to change without much notice.

December 7–8 hours were unpublished

As of mid-2026 the Immaculate Conception bridge hours had not been released — verify on duomomilano.it.

Tourism and hotel figures quoted for the Olympic period are industry projections, not the Duomo's own visitor counts — treat them as a direction of travel rather than a headcount.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Milan Duomo's opening hours?

The complex is open every day of the year, but each part runs on its own clock. The cathedral interior and the Archaeological Area open 09:00–19:00 with last entry around 18:00; the rooftop terraces run 09:00–19:00 with the last ascent at 18:00; the Duomo Museum and the Church of San Gottardo open 10:00–19:00 and are closed every Wednesday. The Crypt of Saint Charles keeps shorter, restricted hours.

Is the Milan Duomo open on Sunday?

Yes. The cathedral, rooftop terraces, museum and Archaeological Area all open on Sundays, but Sunday mornings are heavily restricted by Mass — services run at 07:00, 08:00, 09:30, 11:00 (in Latin), 12:30 and 17:30. The Crypt of Saint Charles shrinks to an afternoon-only window of 13:30–15:30 on Sundays and religious holidays. Arrive after the main morning Masses, from early afternoon.

What is the best time of day to visit the Milan Duomo?

Right at the 09:00 opening, or after about 16:00. Crowds peak between roughly 10:30 and 13:30, and all summer weekend afternoons are busy. The 09:00 slot is both the quietest and the best light for the rooftop terraces.

What is the best season to visit the Milan Duomo?

April to May and late September to October — mild weather, clearer light and thinner crowds than high summer. Summer is hot and crowded; winter is quiet and cold with early sunsets, but gives the clearest views of the Alps from the terraces.

Why is the Duomo Museum closed on Wednesdays?

Wednesday is the museum's standing weekly closure day, shared with the adjoining Church of San Gottardo in Corte. It is the complex's only regular weekly closure — the cathedral, rooftop terraces and Archaeological Area all stay open on Wednesdays, and a cheaper "Duomo only" ticket is sold that day in place of the Duomo + Museum ticket.

What time is the last entry to the Milan Duomo rooftop?

Official ticketing pages cite a last ascent of 18:00, while some other sources list 18:10; closing procedures begin around 18:30. Treat 18:00 as the working cut-off and confirm on the day, since the figure varies between sources. On extended-hours evenings the terraces stay open until 20:00.

Can you visit the Milan Duomo terraces in the evening in 2026?

Yes, on selected dates. The terraces close at 20:00 over Easter (3–6 April), Liberation Day (25–26 April), Labour Day (1–3 May), Republic Day (30 May–2 June) and every Friday to Sunday from 5 June to 13 September 2026. Separately, the Serate d'Incanto sunset concerts run every Thursday from 11 June to 10 September 2026, with lift access from €20 full / €10 reduced.

How long should I allow for a Milan Duomo visit?

About 45–60 minutes for the cathedral interior alone, roughly 1.5–2 hours if you add the rooftop terraces, and 2.5–4 hours for the full complex including the Duomo Museum and the Archaeological Area.

Is the Milan Duomo open on Christmas Day?

Only for worship. On 25 December the terraces, museum, crypt, Archaeological Area and shops all close, and the cathedral opens for services alone — there is essentially no tourist sightseeing that day. Pick another date. On 26 December the complex reopens and the museum runs a special opening.

Does the Milan Duomo rooftop close in bad weather?

Yes, and often at short notice. Thunderstorms, high winds and ice all close the terraces. Light rain does not, though the marble becomes slippery. If the forecast is unsettled, do the indoor areas first and keep the rooftop flexible.
