TL;DR
- The fastest, cheapest way to the Duomo is the metro. Take M1 (red) or M3 (yellow) to Duomo, which sits directly beneath Piazza del Duomo, with exits about a minute's walk from the cathedral. A single ATM ticket costs €2.20 and is valid for 90 minutes.
- From the airports: Linate is now about 15 minutes away on the driverless M4 (blue) line for €2.20, changing to M1 at San Babila. Malpensa is best reached on the Malpensa Express (€15) to Cadorna or Centrale, then a short metro hop. Bergamo (Orio al Serio) is an €8–13 coach to Milano Centrale (about 50–60 minutes), then the M3.
- Don't drive. The Duomo is inside the Area C congestion-charge zone (€7.50 a day) and there is no parking at the piazza. Park at a park-and-ride metro station on the edge of the city instead, and watch for pickpockets at the crowded Duomo and Centrale stations.
Key findings
- Duomo station is the interchange of M1 (red) and M3 (yellow), directly under Piazza del Duomo. Its exits lead straight into the square beside the cathedral, and underground passages run toward Palazzo Reale, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, La Rinascente and Piazza Cordusio.
- A single ATM ticket is €2.20 (90 minutes); a 24-hour ticket is €7.60, a 3-day ticket €15.50 and a 10-ride carnet €19.50. Children under 14 travel free.
- Milan is fully contactless. Tap a credit or debit card, phone or smartwatch at the turnstiles (the CleSS system), and the total charged to that device never exceeds €7.60 a day. Paper tickets have been replaced by the reusable RicaricaMi card.
- The M4 blue line, fully open since October 2024, links Linate Airport to the centre. It reaches San Babila (the M1 interchange) in about 12 minutes and Duomo in about 15 minutes, for the standard €2.20 fare.
- The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics (6–22 February 2026) brought expanded night services and full metro accessibility, along with temporary closures of Duomo station on event days. Those dates have now passed.
The Duomo metro station
Duomo is an underground interchange serving Line 1 (red, M1) and Line 3 (yellow, M3), right at Piazza del Duomo. The M1 platforms opened on 1 November 1964, and the station became an M3 interchange on 1 May 1990.
From the mezzanine, underground passageways lead to a series of exits toward Piazza Cordusio, Palazzo Reale, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Torino, and there is an exit directly into the basement of the La Rinascente department store. The exits bring you straight up onto Piazza del Duomo, about a one-minute walk from the cathedral. Follow the "Duomo / Piazza del Duomo" or "Cattedrale" signs.
Other experiences you might enjoy
Once you are in the square, everything else in the centre is a short walk or one metro stop away. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II leads to La Scala; Sforza Castle and the Brera district are about 15 minutes on foot; and The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie is a short ride west on the M1. Hop-on hop-off buses that stop in Piazza Duomo, e-bike tours, street food walks and Duomo rooftop tours all start close to the station exits. The widget below shows live availability for these and other Milan experiences.
Milan public transport basics, 2026
Milan's transport is run by ATM: five metro lines, M1 (red), M2 (green), M3 (yellow), M4 (blue) and M5 (lilac), plus trams, buses and suburban rail. M1 and M3 serve Duomo directly; M4 connects via San Babila; M2 and M5 connect through interchanges such as Cadorna and Centrale.

Trams and buses near the Duomo
Tram lines 1, 2, 3, 12, 14, 16, 19, 24 and 27 stop near the Duomo. The historic "Carrelli" trams, in service since 1928, still run on scenic line 1, past La Scala and the Duomo toward Centrale. For €2.20 they are a cheap and charming way to sightsee. For a guided version, the Last Supper Skip-the-Line Ticket & Milan Tram Tour pairs a vintage-tram ride through the centre with a skip-the-line Last Supper visit. It has only 40 reviews (4.7★), so check recent feedback before booking.
If you would rather have a commentary and a hop-off at each sight, the City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off Bus (4.0★ from 8,161 reviews, from $29) has its Line B start in Piazza Duomo. Recurring complaints are about the waits between buses and the traffic, so read recent feedback first.
Getting to the Duomo from stations and airports
| From | Route | Time and cost |
|---|---|---|
| Milano Centrale | Metro M3 (yellow) direct to Duomo, no changes | Under 10 minutes |
| Milano Cadorna | Metro M1 (red) direct to Duomo, no changes | Quick and change-free |
| Milano Porta Garibaldi | M2 to Cadorna then M1, or via M3 at Repubblica | About 10–17 minutes |
| Malpensa Airport (MXP) | No metro. Malpensa Express train to Cadorna or Centrale, then a short metro hop | About 37–43 min to Cadorna, about 51 min to Centrale; €15 one-way, €25 return. Coaches to Centrale about 50–60 min from about €5–10. Taxi fixed €110 |
| Linate Airport (LIN) | M4 (blue) from Linate Aeroporto to San Babila, then walk 5 minutes or ride one M1 stop | About 12 min to San Babila, about 15 min to Duomo; €2.20 |
| Bergamo Orio al Serio (BGY) | No direct rail. Coach (Autostradale, Terravision, Flixbus, Orio Shuttle) to Milano Centrale, then M3 | About 50–60 min, about €8–13, plus the metro |
Malpensa: the Malpensa Express adult one-way fare rose from €13 to €15 on 1 August 2025. Cadorna is the better terminus for the Duomo because the M1 runs straight there.
Linate: this is now the easiest transfer of the three. The M4 runs driverless trains from the airport into the centre for the price of an ordinary ticket.
Bergamo: there is no train. Book a coach to Centrale and ride the M3 to Duomo.
If you would rather book the airport leg before you fly, GetYourGuide sells both Malpensa options and the Bergamo coach. The price is shown live when you check dates.
Trenord · one-way · to Milano Centrale
Milan City/Airport: Malpensa Express Train Tickets, 1-Way
The train we recommend from Malpensa, bought before you land. This listing runs between Terminals 1 and 2 and Milano Centrale only, one-way, so you finish on the M3 to Duomo. If you want the Cadorna terminus or a return, buy from Trenord instead.
Direct bus · one-way · to Milano Centrale
Malpensa Airport T1/T2 (MXP): Transfer to/from Milan Center
The coach option, with no stops between Terminals 1 and 2 and Milano Centrale. The ticket is valid on any departure that day, so a late flight does not lose you the fare.
Direct bus · one-way · to Milano Centrale
Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY): Transfer to/from Milan Center
With no train from Orio al Serio, this direct coach to Milano Centrale is the way in. The ticket is valid on any departure that day; from Centrale, take the M3 to Duomo.
Linate needs no booking: the M4 is an ordinary €2.20 metro ride.
Walking
The Duomo is in Milan's compact pedestrian centre. From La Scala it is about 5 minutes through the Galleria, from Sforza Castle about 15 minutes, and from Brera about 15–20 minutes. In the centre it is often faster to walk than to take the metro one or two stops.
Two guided tours connect the Duomo with these walks: a Duomo and La Scala Museum tour (4.3★ from 202 reviews), and a Last Supper and Sforza Castle tour (4.7★ from 1,502 reviews).
For what to see along the way, our guide to Milan's top sights covers La Scala, Sforza Castle, Brera and the rest of the centre.
Driving and parking
Driving is strongly discouraged. The Duomo is inside Area C, Milan's congestion-charge and limited-traffic zone, where the access ticket has cost €7.50 a day since 30 October 2023. There is no parking at the piazza.
Instead, use a park-and-ride at a metro terminus on the edge of the city and ride in for €2.20:
- Lampugnano on the M1, which runs direct to Duomo
- San Donato on the M3, which also runs direct to Duomo
- Famagosta on the M2, changing to the M1 at Cadorna or the M3 at Centrale
Accessibility
Duomo station is wheelchair accessible via a lift at the corner of Piazza Duomo and Via Silvio Pellico. Ahead of the 2026 Olympics, Milan made the older M1, M2 and M3 lines fully accessible, and M4 and M5 are step-free by design. Check real-time lift status in the ATM Milano app before you travel.
The older "Carrelli" trams are not wheelchair accessible. Use the metro or the modern low-floor trams instead.
Inside the cathedral complex, step-free access to the roof stops at the first terrace level. Our rooftop terraces guide explains the lifts.
Practical tips
- Best airport routes: Linate, take the M4 to San Babila and walk. Malpensa, take the Malpensa Express to Cadorna or Centrale, then the metro. Bergamo, take a coach to Centrale, then the M3.
- Crowds and pickpockets: Duomo and Centrale are the most pickpocket-prone stations. Keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets.
- "Helper" scams: say no to strangers offering to "help" at ticket machines. The machines have English menus.
- Buying tickets: contactless tap-to-pay is easiest. Otherwise use the ATM app or a station machine.
- Underground connections: you can walk from the station mezzanine straight into La Rinascente's food hall.
The scams above the ground are the bracelet and bird-seed kind. Our Piazza del Duomo guide describes them.
2025–2026 updates
- M4 blue line to Linate: fully opened on 12 October 2024. Linate to the centre takes about 12–15 minutes for €2.20.
- Contactless and RicaricaMi: Milan completed its switch to contactless payment and the reusable card in 2026.
- Fares: standard urban fares were held for 2026. Confirm them on atm.it.
- Malpensa Express: the adult one-way fare rose to €15 (from €13) on 1 August 2025.
- Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics (6–22 February 2026): night services were expanded, and on certain event days Duomo and San Babila stations closed temporarily for crowd control. Those dates have now passed.
What we'd actually do
- Take the metro by default. M1 or M3 to Duomo is the fastest, cheapest and most reliable route. Pay by contactless tap.
- Match your airport route to your hotel. Linate: M4 to San Babila. Malpensa: Malpensa Express to Cadorna (near the Duomo) or Centrale. Bergamo: coach to Centrale, then the M3.
- If you will take four or more rides in a day, buy a 24-hour (€7.60) or 3-day (€15.50) ticket, or rely on the €7.60 daily contactless cap.
- Don't drive into the centre. Park and ride at Lampugnano, San Donato or Famagosta.
- Guard your belongings at Duomo and Centrale, and refuse unsolicited "help" or bracelets.
Arriving is the quick part. If you are heading straight for the roof, our skip-the-line guide covers the three queues waiting at the top of the station stairs.
Before you go: the fine print
Prices and hours change
Confirm fares on atm.it, Area C on comune.milano.it and trains on trenord.it close to your travel date. Some sites still quote a €2.00 single or a €13 Malpensa Express.
Some figures are approximate
The roughly 25 m depth of the M3 platforms and some of the journey times above are approximate.
No tunnel into the Galleria
A dedicated underground passage into the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is not documented. Reach it across the piazza.
Olympic closures are over
The station closures applied only to the February 2026 Games. Normal service now applies.
